What is mindful counselling?
Mindful counselling is based on the ancient practice of mindfulness. It is a very popular approach that can be extremely beneficial for people who are stressed, anxious or suffering from mood related issues.
In mindful counselling we work with clients using counselling approaches and mindfulness practices. We also offer mindfulness courses for people who wish to learn more about the theory and techniques involved in becoming more mindful.
Does mindfulness work?
Mindfulness can be extremely helpful in helping focus your mind both on the immediate present and you as a person, your presence. This process, with practice, allows you to recognise the distraction and the wanderings of the mind as just thoughts and not reality. For example, your mind may have started thinking: “I can’t cope”, or “I’m no good at that”, and these thoughts will lead to negative feelings and beliefs about yourself such as anger, sadness, guilt, anxiety, or regret or “I’ll never be good enough”. By letting these feelings pass through your mind more freely and learning to accept them-and yourself- as just thoughts and feelings and nothing more, you can begin to free yourself of the negative feelings-sometimes called our negativity bias- that accompany them and begin to feel more peaceful and calm.
What can mindfulness do for me?
As you practice mindfulness techniques you will realise how your mood is impacted on by your thoughts. Once you learn to accept your thoughts as simply thoughts and locate yourself as a more embodied person, you will begin to achieve a sense of increased wellbeing and calm.
